I have to come back on this to mention my additional finding, i.e. that this alphabetical preference by BS.Player is still there if "Auto load any subtitles in current directory" is selected...

are not the same format!
(Neither is Mongol.2007.DVDRip.XviD-TDM.rar
nor subtitle file...

BS.Player apparently simply assumes the (alphabetically) first rar-file (with subtitles in it) which it encounters in a subfolder...
