Seems that CoreAVC it's prefered to decode also...

Seems that CoreAVC it's prefered to decode also VfW in AVI, the above mentioned file.

This is the encoding option in VfW and also you can see that the decoder used to render the file is x264 VfW

x264 it's not designed to be used in AVI format. ...

x264 it's not designed to be used in AVI format.
FFDshow can decode such things.
I am not sure if CoreAVC can decode it so I suggest to look around for the VFW version of x264
...
