matroska (mkv) support

I was curious to test matroska container format.
As you wrote one should install gabest splitter for proper playback in your player. BTW, one should install core vorbis filter as well for ogg vorbis audio in those files.
But doing so I had no success.
Neither in bsplayer nor in core media player.
Both open up and close immediately.
MKV file (XVid + Ogg Vorbis) renders without a problem in graphedit, gspot proves that as well, and they also play fine in wmp, zoom and mdvd.
Why?
I admit that I also have CDL plug-in, matroska properties shell extension AND original matroska direct show filter installed. Unregistering those originals won't have an effect on playability. Graphedit does not choke...
Any explanations ? Thanky.
