MKV confusion

Hi all,

I know MKV is a container and BSplayer supports MKV files with .mkv extension. I downloaded a file with .mkv extension and deeped into it using MediaInfo and the file is encoded actually by AVC. Audio is MP3 no problem. But when i tried to open with Bsplayer it said "Can't open file".

Question: Though i have CoreAVC and i was opening AVC-based video files fine with other containers such as MP4, why couldn't Bsplayer open MKV file though its video codec is AVC?

Note: I didn't install anything specifically related-to-MKV, but video filters are installed such as CoreAVC to decode within MKV container.

Thanks for the advance.

To play a stream inside a container, such as MKV, you need 3 filters. A splitter, that split the audio and video streams and any other stream inside (such as subtitles). An video decoder (such as CoreAVC) and an audio decoder, such as AC3Filter. You seem to lack the splitter. So, install either Gabest MKV splitter or Haali media splitter.
On the other hand, MKVs usually don't have MP3 audio, but AC3 or DTS.

Thanks adicoto for your reply. I was watching MP4s, (AVC) with Gabest Splitter now it requires another MKV-specific splitter? Which MKV splitter do you recommend to run fail-free in Bsplayer:

MP4s have their own splitter (such as Gabest MP4 splitter or haali media splitter)

I personaly use Gabest splitters. For both formats.

Well, could give a download link or attach, just for "Gabest MKV Splitter"?

Finally, does having Gabest MP4 splitter cause a conflict after installing another Gabest filter, Gabest MKV splitter filter?

Gabest MKV splits MKV files, and only MKV
Gabest MP4 splits MP4 files, and only MP4

You can find it on sourceforge or on free-codecs.

I googled "Gabest MKV Splitter" and couldn't find an exact relevance regarding that filter.

The closest results are:
Free-Codecs.com :: Download Matroska Splitter 1.0.3.1 : A DirectShow splitter filter for the Matroska format

Browse guliverkli Files on SourceForge.net

Are they Gabest? There isn't any label that they're Gabest. Seems 1.0.2.9 is the latest on SourceForge?

Or it's kind of you to upload yours or attach it here to remove the suspicion :)

Thanks!

On sourceforge, next to the project name "guliverkli" you will find the name of the developper: Gabest.
Guliverkli project included some free video decoders (MPEG2, ogm...) splitters (MP4, MKV, FLV....) subtitle filters (VobSub, later known as VSfilter), software (Media PLayer Clasic) , audio filters (DTS and AC3 decoders) and the list can go on....

here you can find the whole list:

latest Matroska splitter from Gabest is 1.0.3.1:
