Does virtualdub open the file after the error or not ?
If you uninstall xvid and assign divx decoder to decode genereic MPEG4 what happens ?

Sorry, XviD decoder version is hard to get. But try to uninstall it from start->all programs->xvid or start->all programs->your_code_pack->xvid and install latest version...

OK, it can't be MP3's decoder error, so probably is caused by the video decoder. Can you tell what version do you have ?

PS: nasty thing codec packs

It can't be AC3 and MP3. Do you have an AC3 decoder and an XviD decoder (codec) ?
