i get this every time a play an Avi..... mpg's play fine

I think I also had this problem in the past. You could try the following for ffdshow:
- get the latest ffdshow: http://athos.leffe.dnsalias.com/ffdshow-20040424.exe and install it.
- disable "nic's postprocessing"
- disable "picture properties"
