DDHELP caused invalid page fault in WINMM.DLL

i have been getting this error in almost every media player i try for a number of movies which i have been trying to play - the only media player that works without any problems is winamp - i want to switch to bsp or crystal player because they have a subtitle feature that winamp doesn't - i have tried about 10 different media players - all with the same error - even divx player has it - i have the latest video driver for my matrox g400 card - i tried every directx from version 6 to 9 and it's always the same result - only winamp works - my system is win98 first edition (i don't want to upgrade - too much software on the pc that might stop working) - i read in a download.com post that bsp can avoid this error if you go to options and preferences and chose the video tab and then select "use old rendering mode" - however i see no such option available - microsoft suggests a fix for this error that does not work for me - namely to delete dsetup16.dll and dsetup32.dll and reinstall directx - these files do not exist on my system - i have onboard sound VIA mainboard with drivers that are not updated by the manufacturer but i didn't think ddhelp was an audio related thing - any suggestions would be appreciated - thanks
