directx 7 or later

hello,
I want to figure out if I can play movies on my computer. bsplayer can, wright?
I'm trying to install bsplayer, the latest version. I have windows 98.
But when i'm trying to play an mp3 file i get the message that this version needs directx 7 or later.
Can anybody tell me what this is? What can I do?
