a few suggestions

1. mouse cursor should be removed in full screen mode, either completely or after a short period of no movement

2. "free resize" should be able to decrease screen size, too

cheers.

Mouse it hides itself after few seconds. Your's not ?

BSPeter 8th February 2004 12:32 PM

(1) mouse pointer: no problem (like adicoto)
(2) to decrease screensize: why don't you use minus on numeric keypad?
(This actually is default key for pan-out, but isn't the result what you mean? Alternatively you could use zoom-out, but you have to define a key for that first through ... right-click > Options > Preferences > Key definitions & WinLIRC in which connection please also duly note that definitions should be set separately for Windowed mode and for Full screen mode)

Oh, the mouse pointer hides now... Never mind then. :)

Anyway, about the screen size... The problem I'm having is with videos whose aspect ratio is not right, so I have to adjust them manually by decreasing screen size vertically.

I figured I could achieve that by first zooming out or pan-scanning (which is basically the same[?]) and then widening the screen by using free resize left and right. However if I now see that the aspect ratio is still not right, by a minimal margin, I naturally try to zoom out a little bit more in order to adjust the screen size just a bit more. However, by panscanning or zooming, the screen is reset to its original aspect ratio and size and I have to start all over again!

So this is where I thought a screen size decrease function could come in handy.

I hope I've explained it well enough, thanks.

None of the standard options
[Shift]+[1] / [Shift]+[2] / [Shift]+[3]
result in the correct picture?
Perhaps add a custom aspect ratio then?
right-click > Options > Preferences > Video (lower part at the right)
(Aspect ratios selectable through right-click > Video > Aspect ratio)

Ohh, ok, I'm officially retarded now.

Selecting 16:9 aspect ratio does the job just fine... Thanks BSPeter! :)

Cheers.

EDIT:

Oh, another thing:

It would be nice if BSPlayer could display more than 3 lines of subtitles at the same time!

adicoto 9th February 2004 03:15 PM

And you should see the movie between the lines ?
2 lines is more than enough.

Not if there's more lines to read in the subtitles... I'd rather read what the subtitlers intended us to read, instead of crippled text!

I mean, sure it's a bit much having more than 3 lines of subs, but what can the common end-user do about that? If one decides to make subs with more than 3 lines, then isn't it their choice? So, I believe it wouldn't be wrong to make it possible to display a few more lines. :)

BSPeter 12th February 2004 11:49 AM

I fully agree with adicoto
BSPlayer shows upto 3 lines of subtitles. In The Netherlands movies are almost never dubbed, but subtitling them is, for all practical purposes, the near 100% standard. We really are a "subtitling country". The overwhelming majority of subtitles are 1 or 2 lines. I've come accross a subtitle file with 3 lines only very exceptionwise (and I've quite a few!!). Sofar I've never seen any subtitlefile with 4 lines. So for normal everyday's practice even 3 lines is almost "overkill", let alone 4 lines.
I personally feel that for subtitles of over 3 lines, its the subtitler which has done a real bad job!
A subtitle must remain a subtitle and not a text for cuemaster or teleprompter purposes!

Probably because BSPlayer doesn't support them, perhaps? :P

In any case, I have indeed recently seen a movie with 4 lines of subs.
It occurred a few times throughout the movie. I was eagerly testing
my newly downloaded video player called "BSPlayer", and I must
commend you, for I was very much impressed by its capabilites,
except for one thing: I wasn't able to fully read and comprehend
all subtitles with BSPlayer's subtitle engine, because it just cut
off the last line! Needless to say, I was very confused and
bewildered. Then I decided to see what ffdshow's plugin
engine would do, and voil?•! It worked perfectly!

Now, you may reply, "Yes, but that's the subber's fault, not ours!!"
- Of course it's their fault! But why should the person, who just
wants to enjoy the movie with his favorite player, get
punished by such a trivial thing? Just because it's
the subber's "fault"?

Sorry, to me it sounds like a bad excuse. Of course you're right,
in a manner! But is blaming others really enough? It's not
solving any problems and doesn't really help
anyone, does it?

Can't you be so sensible as to just overlook that little thing and
try to implement a very simple workaround, just to please the
people who want a good player? A player that can not only
display subtitles if they're made perfectly, but one that
may even be able to correct seemingly bad
subtitles?

Just saying that nobody needs more than 3 lines sounds a bit
prejudiced, if you ask me. If your player were able to display
more lines, would that really harm anyone, besides your
pride? If anything, it would make your program better!
Better than your competitors'! You'd be looked highly
upon for trying to make our world a better one!
But I digress...

That's all I'm going to say about this...
Now it's up to you to decide, whether
you think such an implementation
would be reasonable.

I just hope BSPlayer will become the
best player around. Nothing more...

Thank you for your patience.
Good bye.

Usually, when people in the Netherlands watch a movie in the cinema or at home on their televisionsets, I'm pretty sure BSPlayer isn't used. Also I've (so far) never seen commercial DVD's with Dutch subtitles which have more than 3 lines!
Further my dear nk FYI: I'm just another user of BSPlayer and not its creator (which is bst), so most of your remarks are way off!
Maybe next time don't jump to conclusions if you don't know!
As a user (just like you, well, perhaps I have been around a bit longer) I'm entitled to have my own opinion on subtitles that require over 3 lines: I would still suggest a subtitler who would make such subtitles to better look for another job (like I would also suggest a car-designer who designs a car of 4 meters width to look for another occupation in stead of complaining to the roadworkers, that they should make wider roads; one simply has to draw the line somewhere)

nk 12th February 2004 10:25 PM

Well, you see, The Netherlands isn't the only country in the world where subbed movies are released. And secondly, subtitles aren't always made professionally, but occasionally by fans or amateurs, as well. Just FYI. :)

Anyway, I apologize for declaring you as a developer... You see, I'm a newbie here and can't know everything. :P

Peace.

BSPeter 12th February 2004 10:38 PM

No news; my opinion remains unchanged; Sorry
