questions about overlay mode 1/2

Some movies are displayed really weird on my TV in overlay mode 1 (black bands usually on right). if I choose overlay mode 2 they look fine but then the OSD and subtitles don't work. Why is that? Any way to fix it?

Also hardware color controls don't work on my radeon 8500. Why?

Turn off YV12 and use YUV2 instead, that should fix it in overlay mode 1.
