crashes playing ogm or mkv files

My info:

- BSPlayer 1.22 (b817).
- Windows 2000
- Intel Pentium 4 2.60GHz
- 1GB RAM
- Matrox G550
- DirectX 9.0c

Although I'm running 1.22 (b817), the crashes have affected all the versions for the last while (maybe since 1.0?). It ALWAYS crashes. It crashes at random points of then ogm and mkv that I play which allows me to reload the video and jump to the spot just before the crash and continue watching until bsplayer crashes again. This reloading has become a ritual now.

I don't know if it's a factor but all the OGM and MKV files I play have multiple audio streams.

The way it crashes differs, even playing the same file multiple times. Sometimes I get bsplayer error popup screens. Sometimes the Windows error popups. Sometimes both. Sometimes bsplayer just suddenly exits/disappears. Sometimes many error popups appear in rapid succession.

I always have the latest codecs installed.

adicoto 13th March 2005 08:49 AM

I am not sure if it helps, but can you say what audio streams do you have ? AC3 or MP3 ? Do they all have the same audio or video codec ?

aok 13th March 2005 08:23 PM

I'm not sure if any of the OGM or MKV's I have use AC3.

Here are some codec combinations (container, video, audio) from anime series I have in OGM and MKV formats. The info was obtained from the BSPlayer Filters->Advanced popup window when playing the video:

- OGM, XviD, Vorbis
- OGM, DivX, Vorbis
- MKV, XviD, 3ivx D4

I found each of the above combinations at least twice in completely separate anime series. Each series was created by different people.

Also, I've played a lot of AVI files using XViD and AC3 and they have never crashed on me. It's always been OGM and MKV (for which I haven't paid attention to codecs until now).

Crashes in Full Screen

I have a very similar issue. BSPlayer always crashes when I try to switch it full screen for playing OGG or Matroska containers. Multiple audio streams are not an issue with AVI or MPEG2 files. Files can be played fine while in a window.

- BSPlayer 1.36.825
- Haali Media Splitter 2005-11-25 -OR- OggDS
- FFDshow 2005-11-15 (but happened with an older ver too)
- Win98 -OR- WinXPSP1 (nLite'd)

Tizio 20th February 2006 02:49 PM

I have no problems with them..
Can you try to update both Haali and FFDShow? (it's better if you don't install ffdshow if your computer specs are high enough, instead install DivX/XviD codecs)

Quote:

Haali Media Splitter
Changes

* 30/01/2006 [Matroska] Updated MatroskaParser source.
* 29/01/2006 [General] Return proper LCID in IAMStreamSelect. [OGM] Properly handle codecs that have CodecPrivate data.
...

J7N 20th February 2006 09:53 PM

Thank you for reply. I will check out the new Haali. Multiple audio streams do not cause this, even with Matroska container.

Yes it would be better to have separate decoder filters as I don't use any FFdshow audio/video processing function. I still haven't found filters for all needed formats though.

You can take a look at BSPeter's "READ THIS FIRST BEFORE POSTING" (sticky) post.
There you can find a link to adicoto's list of codecs

And maybe also to www.free-codecs.com

J7N 23rd February 2006 04:25 PM

I am sorry to report that Haali 2006-01-30 didn't improve the situation. This problem seems crearly caused by BSPlayer. The problem files can be played in mplayer2.exe and Light Alloy.

The problem is that I cannot turn off video resizing in those programs. They are always trying to stretch the video, even for a few pixels.

Tizio 23rd February 2006 04:50 PM

Can you upload the smallest of your video files that you have problems with?
If you can, maybe edit it to make it even smaller..

As I said before I never had problems by playing OGM and MKV files from BSplayer (with haali, matroska splitter or oggds installed)

J7N 23rd February 2006 05:40 PM

Ok. The file I have now is 225 MB long.

I tried reseting BSPlayer to default configuration. Yay! It didn't crash, but... ..until I told it to set a video resolution when switching to full screen. With all other options set to defaults, it crashed again.

Well, at least we have new info..
I'll try to see if I have the same problem when changing resolution. Unfortunally now I can't test it. Maybe tonight..

J7N 27th February 2006 12:22 AM

Did you manage to reproduce this problem?
I discovered that it does not happen with all Matroska's, but couldn't isolate the cause.

Yes (well, no, I can't reproduce the problem), sorry if I forgot to mention this
I was able to play all ogm and mkv files that I have also when changing resolution in fullscreen mode.

For some reason I'm no more able to use haali media splitter, but with oggds the ogm files played perfectly

J7N 27th February 2006 01:48 PM

Thank you for trying to help. :)

After converting the movie to AVI, I was able to switch to fullscreen. I made a 9 MB clip of the crashing video if anybody has an idea and he wants to test it.

ftp://free:free@j7n.sytes.net:300/ctemp/crashclip.mkv
ftp://free:free@j7n.sytes.net:300/ctemp/crashclip.ogg

FTP may not work in Opera, if it doesn't try this or this.

Tizio 27th February 2006 04:03 PM

I donwnloaded your clips and now I'll test them.. I hope to be able to find a solution for you

Tizio 27th February 2006 05:11 PM

Ok, I tried with both files and:
1. When playing MKV video and switching to fullscreen (by changing resolution) BSplayer crashes [Audio Decoding=AC3Filter, Video Decoding=CoreAVG Video Decoder, Splitter=HaaliMediaSplitter]
2. When playing OGG video and switching to fullscreen (by changing resolution) BSplayer DIDN'T crash [Audio Decoding=AC3Filter, Video Decoding=CoreAVG Video Decoder, Splitter=OggDS]

It seems that BSplayer has problems with Haali media splitter.. But maybe it's an Haali problem (ehi, I don't know, only guessing). It seems that BSplayer closes the video file when changing resolution and then it reopens it once the resolution has changed (and then starts again playing the movie from last position before the FullScreen command is sent) and Haali (or BSplayer) is not able to close and then reopen correctly the splitter (there are 2 instances at the same time for a short amount of time..but maybe it's my pc too slow that it can't render the system tray icons before the new instance is opened :? )
I have to try with other audio streams to see if the problem is only with AC3 audio or also with mp3..

J7N 27th February 2006 05:21 PM

I guess we can filter out ffdshow then.

adicoto 27th February 2006 05:25 PM

Downloaded myself. I'll try them.

I think yes

adicoto 27th February 2006 05:59 PM

I think last splitter installed was Haali's so I just get errors when opening files. Downloading matroska pack to test.

Tizio 27th February 2006 06:30 PM

I tried with other MKVs (still with Haali Media Splitter) and no error occured..
I used also one movie posted some posts below (ore from another section of the forum) and it worked fine. If I'll find the link to that file I'll post it.. Anyhow in the other MKVs the audio streams are MP3.

Tizio 27th February 2006 06:37 PM

Here the links

adicoto 27th February 2006 07:00 PM

Same error here, using FFDshow and Haali media splitter. Play ok until resizing.

Whit the files in my link or withith the one posted by J7N?
Can you try to load the movie in 2 instances of BSplayer at the same time without resizing them and see if the error occours again? (I can't at this moment due to my PC :( )

adicoto 27th February 2006 07:21 PM

Crashclip.mkv playing OK in two different instances. No error. But it's not a clean play. It stumbles. Using FFdshow. I've played 3-4 instances of a dvdrip DivX or XviD files with no problems using DivX and XviD decoders. Surely it's no HW problem (P4@2.4 1GB Dual Channel DDR)

Thank you for the test.. So I think it's not caused by the multiple instances of haaly (until it can be caused from 2 instances of Haali and AC3 streams managed at the same time from BSplayer.. :? )
Ok, I'm going too far with my imagination :P

J7N 27th February 2006 07:42 PM

Actually H264 requres ALOT of processing power. BSplayer uses 40% of my 2.6 GHz P4. I downloaded the clips Tizio suggested. Now I'll proceed to testing.

Edit: mewmew-vorbis-ssa.mkv crashed the program.

Haali -> FFDSHOW(MPEG4)
Haali -> CoreVorbis

Other files played fine.
:?

Edit 2: Seems that Haali is the center of this problem. I installed MatroskaSplitter.ax v1.0.2.7 and Beyblade videos suddenly ran fine. MewMew still wouldn't open in BSPlayer (it did in mplayer2.exe), most likely because BS became confused about the unsupported subtitle streams.

adicoto 27th February 2006 08:36 PM

J7N, nice to see your real face, I was wondering at a moment....

I did some tests with Haali media splitter a couple of month ago and I recall having some problems. I'll put a bet on it. I will try to blacklist it and use matroska splitter for testing.

Me too, I never tried it before and never had a problem, now using it there are some..
For ogm I always use oggds and there are no problems, with mkv I used matroska and had no problems, now tried haali and it seems that there are some problems.. :?

adicoto 27th February 2006 08:53 PM

I was editing my post when a sudden reboot (playing crashtest.mkv and changed resolution)

Haali and BSPlayer definetly have some problems together. When using Haali media splitter, BSPlayer don't show any framerate on the file and can't render subtitles on mewmew file. Using Gabest, I have framerate in mkv files and at least one subtitle working in mewmew.

Hmm. It shows 23.976 fps on Beyblade. Other Matroska's also have a framerate swown.

From the diagnostics I was only able to see that you have a lot of codecs installed. The point is that DirectShow can find the correct pins and render the needed A/V streams. (I don't care about embedded subtitles right now.) Yet something strange happens when changing res. Unfortunately my knowledge is insufficient to determine what it is...

I am now thinking about the fact that Haali tries to duplicate BSPlayer's functions: it can select subtitle/audio languages, process subtitles. And that should be done by the player not any filters. Much like Morgan had been causing trouble to some users.

adicoto 27th February 2006 09:47 PM

Don't be so sleepy :)
No, you misunderstud me. My computer just rebooted by itself. No Continue button :(
I was not using Haali !!!

PS: I like to have as much codecs as possible.

J7N 27th February 2006 09:59 PM

You have completely different set of filters installed. I have no Nero, no new Elecard, no QT/Real. I do not have those lossless audio decoders you have. Yet you have the same problem with these mka.

Therefore it follows that it is most likely not caused by an incompatible set of codecs.

adicoto 27th February 2006 10:07 PM

Using Gabest splitter no problem whatsoever with the crashvideo file. Changed from 800x600 to 1024x768 and back with no problem.

Thank you Tizio and Adicoto for your help. :)
I guess I'll use MatroskaSplitter.ax for now.

Tizio 28th February 2006 07:14 PM

You're welcome
And thanks to you!
Anyway I added a link to these posts in bug section, so BSplayer team can investigate furter on Haali/BSplayer bad behaviours.
Bye

I noticed that there are options “Use internal Vorbis decoder” and “For AC3 decoding use”. Those are the two audio formats that crashed in my OGG and Matroska files. AAC (CoreAAC) and MPEG Layer-3 (l3codecx 1.9) didn't crash. I don't understand the purpose of these two options but I see no reason why BS must internally manage these two formats.

What if BSPlayer for some reason tries to select a decoder when switching to full screen? I wonder if that could that be the cause... I will probably mux some MKA's with other audio formats to see if they crash the program.

Edit: PCM audio crashed too, so there's apparently something more.
