Problem with XviD

I’m a happy user of an older version of BSPlayer (Version 0.86, Build 494, 25 Jan, 2002) for many years.
However, when I click on some files in XviD format, an error message appears:

Program Error
bplay.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows
you will need to restart the program
an error log is being created

I’ve only installed the necessary codecs (namely, DivX, XviD, and AC3) on my computer, which runs Windows 2000. According to GSpot, all the codecs are there to play these files (XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder + MPEG Layer-3 Audio Decoder; DirectShow claims to be able to play these files). And I’m sure that the files are not currupt.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is "Support Generic Mpeg-4" of the DivX-decoder deselected?
What version of XviD are you using?
P.S.: I don't use this version any more; the pre 1.xx-version which I still have installed (and can experiment with) is version 0.86 build 501 of 16 Sep. 2003.
This is a link to my Help-to-Help post for version 0.86

Thank you very much for the reply, BSPeter!

The XviD version I got must be pre-1.01 (released before mid-2004).

Regarding the DivX-decoder, I don't think I have the option to deselect "Support Generic Mpeg-4."
(P.S.: I read your instruction on how to do it.)

Thanks again.

I would suggest to update your codecs (e.g. check out the links in my Help-to-Help post).
(If a movie is encoded using a newer version of the codec than the one you're using to decode, it may well be possible that your installed version of the codec cannot cope with possible new added features).

Many thanks for the suggestion.
