I think the codec-settings (brightness, contrast etc.) are a little off-scale. Try this: right-click in movie-window, then select your video codec ('DivX MPEG-4 DVD Video Decompressor' for example)....

It isn't possible to display subtitles UNDER the movie that way (in the 'black' part of the screen'). You'll have to extend the movie-dimensions some way, but I guess that isn't possible...
