Ah, problem fixed. Steps to go:
download AC3 filter ( http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/ )
install it
configure it to 5.1
set the output device as DirectDound: SBLive (or your card)

For me, BSplayer, latest build 501 from 17. 9. remembering correctly the last volume settings well :wink:
It might depend on with output you have selected as well?
In my case it is: SB Live!...
