Last versions of
Vobsub (now v2.18 ) have this feature to extend overlay to 16/9 and put subtitles on it.
And since build 490, bsplayer doesn't crash anymore with vobsub versions above v2.15.
I only use vobsub subtitles, but I think it can load textual ones too.
