I also have GeForce2 MX400 with NVidia drivers v61.77 (on WinXP Pro), but I don't have "your" problems.
Maybe you download wrong drivers:
Win95/98/Me - http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/6...9x_english.exe
WinNT4 - http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/6...t4_english.exe
WinXP (Media Cenet Edition) - http://download.nvidia.com/Windows/m...ional_whql.exe
