Please if you don't exactly know what to install, don't use codec packs.
Instead install only the codecs needed for your movies playback.
Still in
BSPeter's post, you'll find a link to the
adicoto's list of codecs. If you have a recent computer (less than 3-5 years) I suggest you to not install ffdshow neither (if you don't need it for other reasons) but only the DivX/XviD codecs plus the one you really need (remember also the audio codecs).
Then try to see if the artifact is still there.. With chich movies do you have that artifact? To know what is the encoder for a given movie.. read again
BSPeter's post (hey Peter how much did it thake to you to write donw that Help2Help post? It's a huge source of good and needed information :) ) and search for GSpot and similar programs.
