I had this problem with BSPlayer
v1.36, playing AC3 audio in a MPEG2. I didn't check other formats and reverted BSPlayer's config to default.
I would describe this effect as low resolution audio playing at full volume. It could be that only the first 8 bits are being rendered for some reason (I know I said 3 in the last post).
