Probably there is another codec that interfere with ffdshow or other codecs..
Try to use GSpot to know if a video is playable with some of your codecs (install GSpot, load an avi file into it and then try to render the video with the bottom buttons)
As an alternative, you can try to use the internal BSplayer AVI parser:
Start BSplayer, press CTRL+P (to open preferences window) and then click on "Filters management" item while holding the SHIFT key.
Now select the internal parser and try to playback your videos..
