bsplayer can't open .avi's without sub

I'm using bsplayer 0.86 build 494, and when I try to open a divx-movie, Bsplayer crashes. Only when I have a subtitle with exactly the same name (except the extension) I can watch the movie.

Have I done something wrong, or is this a real bug? I checked my preferences, but couldn't see anything that dealt with this...
