Default Sound and Video plugins

Yes, I know there is probably an old post about it but have not been able to find it, so allow me to pose 2 very simple newbie questions:

My current problem is to play an avi file but I am unable to hear it, even after trying configuring all the different options... so I think it must be because I'm missing plugins, filters, decoders or similars. Obviously I'm no expert in all these encoding, video players and similar matters but rather a final user with limited technical knowledge.

Therefore, I would like to ask beyond this current problem and try to address a more general question:

I want to use BSplayer to play ALL my videos... so first I install the player...then what?

What plugins or any other additional features do I need?
Please list ALL of them

When a video does not play properly what should I check and in what order?

Hope it hepls other lost people too.

Thanks

You need codes. Best thing is to get rid off all codecs that you have installed. Than download and istall this:
http://www.bestdownload.com/view.php?detail=750
This is the Gordian Knot codec pack. Features all the codes you want to use.
If you don't know what a codec is, don't worry just install the pack and be happy.
If you want to have sourround sound from stereo sources you should loook out for the Matrix Mixer. Great Program.

Default Codecs

Thanks for your help. Please answer these two more things if you can:

1.- Why cann't I overwrite all installed codecs?
2.- How do I know what codecs I have and how do I usinstall them? (Just erase them?)

Thanks again

First of all, don't use codecpacks. Sometimes (too often) they mess your computer. Install codecs from the installer provided by the manufacturer. First you have to uninstalll a codec to remove it from win registry. Usualy, installers do that by themself. You don't see them doing that. Codecs installed you can find on your control panel, under sound and audio devices, hardware item, video codecs and audio codecs.
