pb with avi file

i have a dvd rip with format avi. i can open it with media player without pb but i cant open it in bsplayer. the film is in swedish so i dont understand a word :? , and wanted to see it with subtitles. why is it? is it because its a dvd rip? normally i havent had any pbs with avi files...
