Default HDR videos colors are washed out with BS Player

Hello,

When I play a video that is "HDR" (usually with 10bit & x265), the colors are always washed out. When I open the same video with VLC, the colors seems fine. But I don't like VLC, I much prefer BS Player (I have my reasons). Check out the differences on the screencaps attached.

I tried the menu "Video=> Color management" but whatever I do, nothing changes...

Anybody knows how to fix this problem?
My screen is not HDR but then why is VLC giving the correct colors (or at least that looks like correct). I don't care the HDR thing, I just want correct colors.

Thanks in advance

Try this and probably one of the settings will provide a more accurate image.
I personally use internal renderer

Hello. I tried all these "options -> preferences -> video -> video rendering" modes but none of them change anything (half of them even make BS Player crash).

Can you post here which codec it's used to decode x265 ?
Open such a file -> rightclick -> options -> filters

Ok, two things can be changed in there:
1. Output, set to TV or PC, depending on the device you use.
2. Change hardware acceleration to none. This way, decoding the video stream doesn't depend on the video card capabilities / updated drivers.

Anyway, there is no available videocard to be used for hardware decoding.

I tried different combinations but no changes :(
I wonder why is VLC rendering the correct colors and BSP not. The software "Windows photos" also renders the colors well. That means my computer can render them.

Any other ideas?

Yes, it can. The problem is in the software = applications and filters used to decode the file.
VLC uses it's own filters, while BSPlayer relies on LAV filters.
LE1:
Anyway, on my old PC with a TV as output, 10 bit files looks the same on both VLC and BSPlayer, while MPC-BE image is far better.

LE2:
Is it possible that BSPlayer forces 10 bit rendering (on a machine that can't render 10 bits) while other players go to 8 bits ? Because the file played by MPC-BE is rendered as: NV12 (8-bit 4:2:0) from an input stated as:
Pin: HEVC x265 10bit Video

Strange thing.
Assumed that somehow LAV filters can't manage well in this configuration so went to search for another x265 decoder and found...none other.

Yes, that was the ideea from the start. But i can't find x264 HDR videos free on the internet to test with another decoder. But I don't give up for now

VLC and MPC uses their own decoder when it comes to x265, whilst BSPlayer uses LAV video decoder.

If it's easier for you, you can use French with no problem.

Thank you very much for your efforts. I speak +/- fluent English so it's fine for me.

All the HDR videos I have seen so far are always x265 and 10bits. However, I have plenty of x265 and 10bits videos that are not HDR and they work very well.

To give you an example of another video that is x265 + 10bits that works fine:

Quote:
ID : 1
Format : HEVC
Format/Info : High Efficiency Video Coding
Profil du format : Main 10@L4@Main
Identifiant du codec : V_MPEGH/ISO/HEVC
Durée : 48 min 46s

Hauteur : 1 080 pixels
Format à l'écran : 16/9
Type d'images/s : Constant
Images par seconde : 25,000 Im/s
Espace de couleurs : YUV
Sous-échantillonnage de la chrominance : 4:2:0
Profondeur des couleurs : 10 bits
Bits/(Pixel*Image) : 0.044

Default : Oui
Forced : Non
Gamme de couleurs : Limited
Coordonnées de chromaticité : BT.709

Another one:

Surprisingly, EVR mode has better colors. It shouldn't work in Windows 10.
