subtitles are cut off left and right (cropped subtitles)

Hello,
Sometimes not always the subtitles are cut in the left and in the right. They are played fine with videolan client.
Any suggestions how to fix this annoying problem?
The option to make subtitles on more lines is selected. I switch to the option to auto resize them if they not fit to see if this will help.
BSP is cutting somewhat the half of the first letter and the half of the last letter.
You can see in the fullscreen mode the first letter should be "K" and the last should be "u".
I've just found that in the windowed mode the first letter "K" is shown how it should be but the last letter "u" is again cut.
Thanks in advance.

Check only "Auto split..." option. Try to change "subtitle margins width" to i.e. 20%.

Also try to lower font size.

adicoto 22nd May 2007 05:17 AM

Usually this it's caused by Haali Media Splitter. If so, uninstall it and install Gabest.

BSPeter 22nd May 2007 07:33 PM

Maybe try changing to a different (standard) font (e.g. for an English sub).
If no cut-offs there, then try changing back to the font you're using now.
By the way: are we talking text-based subtitles?

Hello,
Thanks to all for the replies. I've removed haali media splitter and installed Lazy Man's MKV 1.0.1 alpha 8 for the *.mkv files. And now everything seems ok.
Special thanks to adicoto.

Regards Dim.

Thanks for the reply BSPeter. I can't try switching to English, because everything is fine now. But I will try on my other pc with the same problem. It is really a rare problem maybe 2% of the movies I watch are like that.
And yes we are talking about text based subs

dimchopicha2003 24th May 2007 07:05 AM

  Nope the problem is not solved. Same thing
The movie i am playing is ripped from hdtv. I have installed divx, xvid and ac3 codecs. Do i need something special for hdtv? Could this be the reason of the problem with the subs?

I guess the problem is connected with the font somehow, because I've tried the english subs and they were ok.

It is really strange. I've manually edited the subs to show on 2 lines. And you can see the result. Again the subs are cut off.

I will try other fonts to see if this will help.

That's what I suspected. Seems like a good idea to try if another (cyrillic) font brings a solution.

Thank you BSPeter for the suggestion. I will try it and post the results.

Thank you BSPeter. I think I finally solved my problem.
My font was Arial Bold 22 Cyrillic, I switched to Batang Bold 22 Cyrillic and now it is ok. At least the problematic part of the movie is ok now.
I wonder why Arial Cyrillic is bugged.
Thanks all for the help. Thanks to BSPeter for the suggestion.

I'm also having this exact problem (only in the latest version 2.21, this didn't happen for sure in 2.15), and after a lot of trial and error I managed to "fix" it by not using bold fonts, which sucks, as bold is a must for me in subtitles.

Anyway, I started using regular non-bold, and moved on, but even now, eventually, there are some lines that get cut on the sides too. And it doesn't seem to be because of larger length, they seem to be the regular length. Something changed from 2.15 to 2.21 that shouldn't have, I hope there's a fix for this soon...

dimchopicha2003 4th August 2007 03:13 PM

I am with 2.22 now and the problem is still not fixed. Before I thought it was only me but now I know more and more people have this problem. So if developers reading this or moderators to forward this to the developers the bug is this:

Subtitles are cut off left and right (sides) sometimes using foreign language subtitles (non-english)

I will post this in the bug section too.

Workarounds should be to remove haali media splitter, don't use Bold subtitles, use different font, but this is not problem solving the developers should fix this.

Have the same problem.. :( and I'm not alone!
dimchopicha2003 has right, font changing is not problem solving... :(

J7N 10th August 2007 03:20 PM

This issue is present also on my system using BSPlayer 1.36. BSPlayer should allow some padding while drawing subititles and not try to calculate the exact dimensions.

igor123 15th August 2007 12:36 PM

I have the same problem using BSPlayer 2.23.953.

It happens only while using subtitles with central european characters (I'm using Arial font, bold). The player somehow makes error while calculating the width of special letters of the central european alphabet - for example letters like š or ž. The lines without those characters are displayed ok.

I agree that some more extra padding on each side of the subtitle could be a quick fix.

Oh, and the problem described happens while using text-based srt subtitles.

Bug also reported here and here (locked those, referring to this thread)

^ This is as it should.

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/7038/e2gb3.jpg

^ Here you clearly see the text gets cut off and moves. All I did was a change in movie size.

http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/676/e3pb0.jpg

^ And I scroll the wheel ones more and "wopsydoo" it's fine again.

Seems like BSPlayer gets the width and height from the wrong line to me but it could be some splitter that's messing it all up I really have no idea, just noticed this and I hope I didn't fuel the fire instead of putting some out :P

xjerryx 16th August 2007 10:56 AM

"Now, the bug materializes first as weird changing of the initial font size of the subtitles. I may set the size as 36, but the BSplayer loads the subtitles with a new movie as size 26 or sometimes 46."

Same problem! :(
