Unknown file format DIV3 I have several AVI movies (for example Moulin Rouge or Panic Room) which I'm not able to play in BSPlayer. I alwas get message 'Unknown file format DIV3'. After many suggestions from other forums I did this: - unistalled all codecs, all players (including Windows Media player 9 upgrade). - After that, opening mentioned movie in GSpot reported no codec able to play this movie (description of video format is div3, DivX 3 Low-Motion) - installed newest DirectX, restarted PC - installed ffdhow - GSpot reports 'codec is installed' - 'ffdshow MPEG-4 Video Decorder, ... pres button Render - but after pushing Render button, message changes : Nonetheless DirectShow is apparently NOT able to play this file. No further information is available concerning the apparent discrepancy.' The error code is 0x80040111: (unknown) - BSPlayer reports Unknown file format (DIV3), setting 'Use DivX 4 decoder for MP43, DIV3, DIV4' also doesn't work In some forums was suggested, that file may be corrupted, that I must fix it with DivFix. I don't think so. Reason: - In DivX Player 2.1 it plays perfectly, I am also able open it in VirtualDub. - So I tried to fix this file with DivFix as recommended. It reported several errors (Corrupted data at ... ) , first error at 1:18 - I opened this fixed file in GSpot and bingo! It could be rendered ! - BUT ! The repaired file I am able to play only till 1:18 (previously reported error in DivFix), after that the picture is totally corrupted , only coloured smudges are seen. I have Windows 2000 (SP3), tried it on 2 PCs with similar configuration, problem is on both. Can somebody help me ? |

I was told, that ffdshow is all I need to play all DivX formats, but OK. Let's try. I installed divx3.11 codec. Nothing changed. BSPlayes still reports 'Unknown file format (DIV3)'. GSpot shows me now 3 codecs: DivX ;-) MPEG-4 Low-Motion ffdShow MPEG-4 Video Decoder DivX MPEG-4 DVD Video Decompressor ,but still cannot render that file. When I uninstall ffdShow, the same result. Everything ends with "DirectShow was unable to render the file. Error 0x80040111". |

Open file with VirtualDub. At video select direct stream copy. At audio select direct stream copy. File, save as avi. Give a name for. You should end with a playable file. |

After a many tries I succeeded. Here's my findings. I would like to discuss especially the first 2 comments: - Maybe I was naive, that every file downloaded via P2P and marked as verified on some sites is really error free. - Maybe I was naive, that every time my P2P program (kazaa) crashes, the downloaded file cannot be corrupted at all, even if the source file is OK. - My another fault is that to affirm AVI file as OK, doesn't mean open it in player (DivX player) and drag slider a few times. It means watch the whole movie. - I tried your ideas about VirtualDub, it worked untill cca 2 minutes before end of the movie, there was some really big error which freezed the whole proces (either scanning for errors or saving) and later showed 'Out of Memory'. It also freezed playing the AVI, either in DivX Player or in VDub. Then I knew for sure, that the file is not OK. - I tried also strip index in DivFix utility and reindex in VDub. Result was hopeful, but I could not save more than 65??? frames (cca 44 mins). Probably some counter was overfloving 16 bit value - What helped me was utility called Video fixer, which repaired the AVI quickly and correctly. Now I can open it in BSPlayer, GSpot renders it too. - I think that sharing either original (damaged) or repaired AVI (changed length a little) further to other users would be unreasonable. Any comments to my doings will be welcomed. |

As I wrote, VDub opened the file , but always stopped at the same point when processed or played. There the damage was probably so big, that VDub didn't cope with it. But as I wrote - now I don't see any error at that point.
