tips for reducing lag?

i used to be able to watch moves with no lag on my PII 450 mhz but the new high qulity rips i get ever so slight lag.

is there any way i can alter properties or something to make the movie play smother?

im tring to watch the return of the king. im not sure what format its in i got it off sharereactor. its 3 avi files
