Default Get DivX 5.02!

Unfortunately, it comes bundled with GAIN software (= spyware).
There's nothing you can do about it :-((

Else, codec 4.12 is still very popular and pretty good.
But 5.02 is WAY better still, particularly if you encode your own movies!

Read and get all of them here

Cheers, Smarties :P

Default get ffdshow ;)

If only for playing, not encoding (and in many cases even for encoding), divx5.02 free version is good enough, and comes with no spyware...

besides there is also the ffdshow filter solution. ffdshow is a filter that will allow you decoding divx and xvid (and other) films, you don't need any codec. Plus if you're fan of decoding options, you will enjoy it ;)

If you feel like needing the 'full' DivX pro there is a simple way to disable the included spyware GAIN. look for entry "Gain tickler" in system configuration.

To do this type "msconfig" in command from start menue.
Then click user defined start on tab general.
Jump to tab System start.
Clear the checkbox next to Gain tickler 'something'.
Press OK, reboot. It won't tickle you anymore....

to expand on what bluedan said .....if you plan on encoding divx movies on your own you will need to enable it or you wont be able to.
