Default crashes playing ogm or mkv files

My info:

- BSPlayer 1.22 (b817).
- Windows 2000
- Intel Pentium 4 2.60GHz
- 1GB RAM
- Matrox G550
- DirectX 9.0c

Although I'm running 1.22 (b817), the crashes have affected all the versions for the last while (maybe since 1.0?). It ALWAYS crashes. It crashes at random points of then ogm and mkv that I play which allows me to reload the video and jump to the spot just before the crash and continue watching until bsplayer crashes again. This reloading has become a ritual now.

I don't know if it's a factor but all the OGM and MKV files I play have multiple audio streams.

The way it crashes differs, even playing the same file multiple times. Sometimes I get bsplayer error popup screens. Sometimes the Windows error popups. Sometimes both. Sometimes bsplayer just suddenly exits/disappears. Sometimes many error popups appear in rapid succession.

I always have the latest codecs installed.

I am not sure if it helps, but can you say what audio streams do you have ? AC3 or MP3 ? Do they all have the same audio or video codec ?

I'm not sure if any of the OGM or MKV's I have use AC3.

Here are some codec combinations (container, video, audio) from anime series I have in OGM and MKV formats. The info was obtained from the BSPlayer Filters->Advanced popup window when playing the video:

- OGM, XviD, Vorbis
- OGM, DivX, Vorbis
- MKV, XviD, 3ivx D4

I found each of the above combinations at least twice in completely separate anime series. Each series was created by different people.

Also, I've played a lot of AVI files using XViD and AC3 and they have never crashed on me. It's always been OGM and MKV (for which I haven't paid attention to codecs until now).

Default Crashes in Full Screen

I have a very similar issue. BSPlayer always crashes when I try to switch it full screen for playing OGG or Matroska containers. Multiple audio streams are not an issue with AVI or MPEG2 files. Files can be played fine while in a window.

- BSPlayer 1.36.825
- Haali Media Splitter 2005-11-25 -OR- OggDS
- FFDshow 2005-11-15 (but happened with an older ver too)
- Win98 -OR- WinXPSP1 (nLite'd)

I have no problems with them..
Can you try to update both Haali and FFDShow? (it's better if you don't install ffdshow if your computer specs are high enough, instead install DivX/XviD codecs)

Thank you for reply. I will check out the new Haali. Multiple audio streams do not cause this, even with Matroska container.

Yes it would be better to have separate decoder filters as I don't use any FFdshow audio/video processing function. I still haven't found filters for all needed formats though.

You can take a look at BSPeter's "READ THIS FIRST BEFORE POSTING" (sticky) post.
There you can find a link to adicoto's list of codecs

And maybe also to www.free-codecs.com

I am sorry to report that Haali 2006-01-30 didn't improve the situation. This problem seems crearly caused by BSPlayer. The problem files can be played in mplayer2.exe and Light Alloy.

The problem is that I cannot turn off video resizing in those programs. They are always trying to stretch the video, even for a few pixels.

Can you upload the smallest of your video files that you have problems with?
If you can, maybe edit it to make it even smaller..

As I said before I never had problems by playing OGM and MKV files from BSplayer (with haali, matroska splitter or oggds installed)

Ok. The file I have now is 225 MB long.

I tried reseting BSPlayer to default configuration. Yay! It didn't crash, but... ..until I told it to set a video resolution when switching to full screen. With all other options set to defaults, it crashed again.

Well, at least we have new info..
I'll try to see if I have the same problem when changing resolution. Unfortunally now I can't test it. Maybe tonight..

Did you manage to reproduce this problem?
I discovered that it does not happen with all Matroska's, but couldn't isolate the cause.

Yes (well, no, I can't reproduce the problem), sorry if I forgot to mention this
I was able to play all ogm and mkv files that I have also when changing resolution in fullscreen mode.

For some reason I'm no more able to use haali media splitter, but with oggds the ogm files played perfectly

Thank you for trying to help. :)

After converting the movie to AVI, I was able to switch to fullscreen. I made a 9 MB clip of the crashing video if anybody has an idea and he wants to test it.

ftp://free:free@j7n.sytes.net:300/ctemp/crashclip.mkv
ftp://free:free@j7n.sytes.net:300/ctemp/crashclip.ogg

FTP may not work in Opera, if it doesn't try this or this.

Ok, I tried with both files and:
1. When playing MKV video and switching to fullscreen (by changing resolution) BSplayer crashes [Audio Decoding=AC3Filter, Video Decoding=CoreAVG Video Decoder, Splitter=HaaliMediaSplitter]
2. When playing OGG video and switching to fullscreen (by changing resolution) BSplayer DIDN'T crash [Audio Decoding=AC3Filter, Video Decoding=CoreAVG Video Decoder, Splitter=OggDS]

It seems that BSplayer has problems with Haali media splitter.. But maybe it's an Haali problem (ehi, I don't know, only guessing). It seems that BSplayer closes the video file when changing resolution and then it reopens it once the resolution has changed (and then starts again playing the movie from last position before the FullScreen command is sent) and Haali (or BSplayer) is not able to close and then reopen correctly the splitter (there are 2 instances at the same time for a short amount of time..but maybe it's my pc too slow that it can't render the system tray icons before the new instance is opened :? )
I have to try with other audio streams to see if the problem is only with AC3 audio or also with mp3..

I think last splitter installed was Haali's so I just get errors when opening files. Downloading matroska pack to test.
