might not solve your problem exactly, but many avi files especially downloaded ones can be corrupted... mostly the header info is the culprit...I use...

hi... I have the latest verion of BSplayer and enjoy it a lot... recently when opening mpg files , even ones it has played before I get a "warning- cannot create direct draw surface" error message......
