I've meanwhile further tested and I think you've found a bug there!
(If - after "extending video" - you select under Video > Aspect ratio what is already selected there, the picture will become as you would expect it to be in the first place.)

(Note I will be detaching this thread from the original one, as this no longer has anything to do with it (subtitle shadow). Also I will be moving it to bugs forum).
