Usually, anime / manga come with ASS/SSA subtitles. BSPlayer doesn't have full support for this subtitle format. A fair support, though, it's made possible if you use the new subtitle rendering engine. It can be activated by going to preferences -> subtitles -> use new engine.
As for the mkv file, any media info can ell you that info. Even VirtualDubMOD.
