Please have a look at "Options"/"Preferences"/"Subtitles" (and while you're at it, also check the settings on the "Video"-tab and have a look at "Options"/"Preferences"/"General"/"Remember movie settings")
I suppose you already know how to change font/size/colour of subtitles (rightclick on videowindow ... subtitles ... etc)?
