Default increase/decrease playback rate problem

When I try to decrease playback rate of a movie(avi), my computer shuts down. I can decrease for 2%, but at 3% my computer just crashes. It's the same if I try to decrease it for 10%. That also happened with this other movie some time ago with all versions of BSplayer I used so far. I want to use this because sometimes I get subtitles that have either lower or faster speed rate than the movie. By changing the speed rate of the movie I could synchronize it with the subtitles. I use Windows XP.

Any clue on what the problem is?

It would be easier to use an subtitle editor program and adjust subtitle framerate.

Playback rate is depending on hardware you have and the audio decoder you use.

I got myself a subtitle editor(SubtitleEdit), and fixed it. I had to see the end of the movie to do so, but it worked.

My soundcard is onboard. My mainboard? I'm not sure what you mean, but these are my system specifications:
-AMD Sempron 2500+(1.75 GHz)
-256 of ram

well... you've spoken of system shutdown when choosing another playback rate; the posible solution was for this problem
you haven't mentioned what I've asked you: the mainboard (manufacturer, model)

go to Start -> Run and launch dxdiag.exe

chose "Sound" tab and drag the "Hardware Sound Acceleration Level" to "Basic
I just tried that, and I can change the playback rate all I want now. But how does that effect my computer overall?

I would tell you all about the motherboard, but I don't know where to look for that.

well, it doesn't affect you computers's performances
i think that you're using a cheap soundcard and setting basic acceleration won't affect anything, except maybe improving the system stability and correct issues due to of poor drivers

if you want, download Everest Home Edition from http://www.lavalys.com/
after installing the program, launch it, go to Motherboard -> Motherboard
and copy&paste Motherboard ID and Motherboard Name, here, then
go to Multimedia -> PCI/PNP Audio and copy&paste all, here

Thaks for all the help, but if I'll ever need to change the playback speed again, I'll just use that "Sound Acceleration trick".
