With an appropriate videofile loaded I would suggest:
(rightclick >) Options > Filters > Advanced
click "[+] ffdshow Audio Decoder", then "ffdshow audio"
Now (assuming that you didn't previously change other relevant settings) look at the settings under Mixer and Output (at the bottom of the list at right).  PS: Using AC3 filter myself, so I've no experience with ffdshow audio for AC3
