If you use bsplayer 1 go to video->color controls->brigtness (only with movie loaded)
If you have an Nvidia card, go to desktop, rightclick, properties, settings, advanced, "your card (Geforce, tnt2...), overlay controls, adjust brightness. On Ati cards there must be something similar.

On Ati it's on desktop rightclick, select properties, go to tab settings, press advanced, go to tab 'Color' and adjust your gamma settings.

Probably you won't get any option to adjust video settings because your videocard is too old. If it's an S3 card if I recall well there was an utility S3 video manager but I am not sure it was possible to adjust brightness.
