Default tar, dat

BS player can't open a file (movie) in tar or dat. What should I do?

.DAT probably is from a VCD? So MPEG1 (which comes with windows).
Does the file e.g. play in WMP?

.TAR usually is a zipped (compressed) file.
If you unzip/unpack it; can you play the original file as contained in the .tar-file?
