Default Videos Freezing/crashing laptop

When ever i play videos with BSplayer every so often completely randomly it will freeze up my laptop. Will happen at any time, mostly when i go to resize the video resolution manualy or go to full screen. The laptop had a problem with games as well at one point but a change of drivers fixed it but this problem is still happening. any suggestions to how i can fix this?

What are your laptop specs?
What version of Windows do you have?
Have you installed all the updates from windowsupdate.microsoft.com?
Maybe it's time to update your drivers once more...
Do you have latest codecs installed?
Does the freezing happen in other players as well (Windows Media Player and http://www.radwan.pl/vplayer/ftp/vplayer_06e.zip )?

is the laptop i have, only thing ive changed is i upgraded to Windows XP Professional, and added more Ram to it, currently 768, 128 dedicated to my graphic card. i have all the windows updates installed except SP2 avoiding it cause its a pain. currently up to date with all codecs i use. havent seen it freeze up on any other players yet, i use WMP and Real Player the vplayer freezes up my laptop as well. before i even upgraded to windows xp professional it was crashing. The drivers im using currently are hacked, the other drivers that HP offers wont let me play any games with out it freezing up. thinking about reformating the laptop this weekend and starting fresh on everything.

If I understood you correctly, it freeze VPlayer as well.
Then it might be codec problem.
What codecs do you use?
You should have installed only divx5, xvid by Koepi, ac3, ogg, matroska whatever, VSFilter, and maybe some for non standard video standards @_@
But if you use any codec pack, or you use ffdshow then it may cause problems...

If it's your laptop problem, then I can't be of any help.
But it may be or may be not.

Uninstall Nimo Codec pack.
Uninstall FFDshow.
Uninstall DivX.
Uninstall XVid.
Download latest Divx5 and install.
Download latest XVid from www.koepi.org and install.

Because I don't like codec packs.
I understand that it didn't gave YOU any problems. But the main problem with codec packs is that there are some people who don't have any problems with it and what they do is tell another people that they don't have any problems. Then those other people install codec packs and they start having problems. One thing is sure - if codec pack have install option to choose what codec/filter to install, then person who know what to do will install everything properly. Unfortunatelly most people don't know what to install. Also codec packs sometimes have some veeery strange codec/filters., as well as a little bit outdated codecs.
I heard people saying the same thing as you about other codec packs, and I'm very sceptical about such things.

What your codec pack have:
# Alexander Vigovsky's AC3Filter [Version: 1.0.1.0 RC 5] [New!] - ok, that might be worth checking, cause ac3 0.70b is quite old.
# CyberLink MPEG-2 video decoder [Version: 5.0.0.1121] - huh? what's that ? Why you need to install that?
# DivX ;-) audio codec [Version: 4.1.0.3920]1 - that I don't know, is it the only way to decode ;) audio?
# DivXNetworks DivX Pro video codec [Version: 5.2.0.1263]2 - ok
# Undercut's hacked Microsoft MPEG-4 video decoder [Version: 8.0.0.4487] - hacked? don't like that word
# XviD video codec [Version: 1.0.1] - 1.0.2 is out already

will it decode ogg audio?
will it decode matroska?
will it allow sub/idx subtitles playback?
what about 3ivx?

That's of course only my personal opinion.

about 3ivx?
?

i don't think so.

--------------

coda has an option for every codec included;
it definitely has the cleanest install for divx and xvid (three or four files each + registration) ever.
uninstall is also VERY clean.
this ain't a hoggy crappy codec pack like nimo and similars...
i donesn't include applications or beta stuff, just plain MOST USED codecs which work flawless.
if you need an extra ones, it means you are probably an expert who
don't post his problems on this kind of a forum, but resolves them himself.

please try coda youself first, and then comment. i'm sure you're gonna like this one.
(i used to share your opinion before i tried coda ;) )

p.s.what you like and don't like is your own subjective non-fact opinion, now isn't it?

At least that's how I understood your post.

That I will not do, cause I have no need for codec packs. ^^
But, for example, I already installed the AC3 v1. I didn't even know it exist (it's not on sourceforge site).

Still, I would be very glad if someone would have told me what are mpeg-2, mpeg-4, and ;) for in da coda packa, but that's not actually so important. I may as well Google for it.

Anyway, IF this pack will work for Lantas then great, I'm glad. But I recommend him to do what I told him first, then try codec pack.

Garet_Jax, I see you are verry active in the last days here on forum. But I didn't imagine you have no ideea what is MPEG.
So, MPEG2 is the format used to encode DVD and SVCD.
MPEG4 is DiVX and XviD.
Moving Pictures Expert Group are the ones who created the stanfard known as MPEG, 1, 2 and 4. 3 Does not exist because it can be confused with MP3 wich is MPEG1 layer 3.
AC3Filter is no longer hosted by SF.net from a long time. YOu are out of date.
But I must agree with you about codec packs.

Lantas, let me see what laptop do you have and I will come back later with some advices, I hope. Because it is clearly a problem on your combination hardware/software.

Specs look good. What drivers did you updated ? The ones for the motherboard ? I think this will be a good point to start.
On your video card what settings do you have on overlay ?

Then what in the same codec pack divx xvid and "Undercut's hacked Microsoft MPEG-4 video decoder" are doing?
Also MPEG2 decoder should be one of the codecs installed when installing Windows, am I right? (or maybe with software like Power DVD...) So why install it again?
Anyway, thanks for clarification. I think I read about that somewhere...

No, MPEG2 support don't come with Windows, and never did.
First quality codec for MPEG4 was Microsoft's one. It was hacked by some guys (groups) who generated some different codecs. One became DivX, one became XviD, some of them fall out. But some older files sometimes require that codec to decode the file (I did have once this problem with SMR's codec)
DivX audio is the hacked MP3 decoder from DivX. Some decoders can't handle it and there is no audio. It is bundled in DivX 3.11.

DivX, XviD, 3ivX are all MPEG4 codecs. They usually can decode one each other succesfully. But the encoding is different, that is why are different codecs in the codec pack. XviD can also encode using DivX settings, but with basic settings, not the advanced ones.

I did not update my BIOS never thought to, tried finding out what version of bios i have but found nothing that could check it.

As for the video drivers, the mobility drivers it came with didnt work with games or video players. Went to update it and still the same problem. friend gave me a set of hacked drivers he is using as well, basicaly normal ATI Graphic Drivers, just hacked to work with mobility cards. Version is 6.14.10.6396 , these work with games like Ever Quest and Dawn of War. once and awhile il get video lag for a few secs then the game resumes. No clue how i can find out the video overlay.

1. I was not talking about BIOS, but about motherboard drivers.
2. You don't have an ATI mobility videocard, but an onboard card. That's why I asked about MB drivers, because your videocard is built in the MB chipset.
3. You should look for a driver on ATI's website.

http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html and select WinXP->Motherboard/IGPdrivers->IGP family.

As for overlay, go to Options->preferences->video->renderer. Try to swich among Modes.

Updated the video drivers, same problem less frequent though. Played with the rendering little less freezing but still freezes up. currently looking for mother board updates.
