BSplayer gives you that message because you don't have the proper codec installed for that kind of files :)
You need the proper codec (DivX 3.11).
Take a look at these posts:
http://forum.bsplayer.org/viewtopic.php?t=6929
http://forum.bsplayer.org/viewtopic.php?t=6613

Furter check also adicoto's List of codecs

Bye

Did you read BSPeter's "READ THIS FIRST BEFORE POSTING" post AKA Help2Help (link in my signature)

Yes, but the file opens OK in media player 6.4 (windows) and
it opens ok in virtualdub. Although I don't have divx311alpha
installed, Divx 5.11 or 5.21 plays that content.

Why is bsplayer having an issue?

Did you enable generic MPEG4 support in Quality settings of DivX5.2.1-codec?
(like mentioned by adicoto in the post as referred to by Tizio by the second link in his above post (or as mentioned at about the middle of the "First time user? ..."-part of item (4) of my Help2Help-post)?

Hello,
I tried toggling it on and off but it didn't affect it.

One thing about playing div3 without div3alpha installed,
there is no VIDC entry for it in the drivers32 part of the registry.
So how do those other apps know that divx 5.11 or 5.21 can play
that content? Not sure, but perhaps t's related.
Is it really something to do with enabling generic mp4
content?

For now, I've uninstalled divx and xvid and I'm running Registry
Mechanic and the BIGFIX6b to see if it finds anything.

I'm also going to take a look at the setting of bsplayer to see if
there's anything related.
Thanks.

Try with only DivX5.2.1 installed with Generic MPEG4 supported (and AC3 filter).
