Default "unable to play media file"

when I first installed BSplayer (v2.36 build 990) it played downloaded FLV files perfectly. But having installed other programs it now refuses to play them saying the codec is missing or the file is damaged. I've installed ffdshow and set the FLV files to play using libavcodec but nothing works. I know the files are okay because they play in other FLV players but I can't get BSplayer to play them and to keep playing them. Please help!

Re-installing latest BS.Player (over the existing installation) doesn't help either?
