Cannot Hear Audio CDs

When Playing Audio CDs all I hear is a loud buzz, would this be a missing Codec? can anyone suggest a Codec, I've searched but can't find info on one for CDs just hundreds of Rippers and Burners, not even sure this is the prob as WMP is able to play CDs OK, does anyone have a suggestion?
