AC3 troubles

As seems to be the case with loads of other people, I'm having some AC3 audio troubles.

The problem I have depends on which option I select:

If I set AC3 decoding to: '--' (as described in the AC3 filter help file for BS player) and then load a movie, the volume of the player is set to
-0.01% and cannot be raised above this level. Therefore the picture is seen but there is no sound. On this setting, there is no AC3 Filter option under the properties menu (the only option which appears is XviD MPEG 4 video decoder).

If I set AC3 decoding to 'InterVideo Audio Decoder', I get great 5.1 sound but the audio and video lose sync with each other. On this setting, there is an AC3 Filter option under the propeties menu (together with options for XviD MPEG video decoder and a few other options).

I am using BS Player build 494 on a windows 98SE platform.

Does anyone know what the problem is?

Thanks.
