Subtitles ca n be loaded in two simple ways: If the subtitle is in the same folder as the avi file and have the same name you don't have to do anything. It is loaded by default. Second way is righ-click, load subtitles.

Try open the sub file in a text editor. If you can read it then is a text based subtitle and should work fine. So check if you haven't disabled the subtitle or subtitles are not shown black on the black border.
If you can't read subtitle then is a dvd subtitle and you should convert them to another format. In this case use subrip.
