Overlay modes 1, 2 and RGB

What are these different ovrelay modes, how do they work and what's the difference between them?

My graphics adapter supports Mode 1 & 2 and works well with any of them. Which one is preffered?

Thnx!

I don't know the technical explanation for it, but Mode 2 gives me a better picture. Mode 1 sometimes give me dark green artifacts in black areas of a video, Mode 2 doesn't.

This *might* have something to do with my Matrox G450, as it seems like the DivXG400 workaround (http://www.tac.ee/~prr/divxg400/) is only activated in Mode 2.
