BSPlayer can play RM, if you have the apropiate codecs :

I downloaded the rm media splitter and put it in the BS Player program folder. But it wouldn't play real files with the message "unknown file format"

What should I do please.

Splitters are usually DirectShow filters (.ax extensions) and therefor they have nothing to do with BSPlayer or any other player, but with DirectShow. So, register splitter using regsvr32 splitterfile.ax command (one can enter it from Start menu > Run). Before that copy splitter to your Windows\System32 folder or write full path to splitterfile.ax.

Thanks for the quick reply.

However it looks a bit scary to me....I don't think I'm computer-savvy enough to try that.

You have RM splitter with the .ax extension, right? Let's say it's name is rmsplitter.ax. Copy rmsplitter.ax either to your c:\Windows\system32 (if you use Win 2000/XP) or c:\Windows\system (for 9x/Me) folder. Then click on Start menu, select Run, type in regsvr32 rmsplitter.ax and click OK. You should get message that filter was successfully registered and that's it. Is it really that complicated? ;) One thing you have forgotten: you also need RM video and audio codecs.

pietro 24th November 2003 05:04 AM

OK...I'll set a "system restore" and try it.

I have the basic RealONE player....that would have all the codecs I need would it not?

adicoto 24th November 2003 03:21 PM

First of all you don't need realplayer.
Second, you need a splitter, as MaxB said.
You have downloaded it from the firs link. So, go in the folder where you have extracted the archive. Create an txt file with the .bat extension. Inside wrote:

regsvr32 /s RealMediaSplitter.ax

Run the bat file.

Second thing, the dlls you have downloaded from the second link must be copyied to the windows\system32 folder.

pietro 25th November 2003 10:21 PM

Well, now I have the splitter registered.

But I have d/l the rp9win32codecs.tar.bz2 file but neither XP nor my unzipper that is supposed to recognise .tar files will open it. And if I do get it opened, what then?

Please..where do I go from here? It would be great if BSplayer could play Real and QT files, as I really hate both those players.

Try to open it with IZArc.

adicoto 26th November 2003 02:13 PM

Winrar can do the extraction ok. Inside the archive are some dlls. Copy them to your windows\system32 folder.

I have tryied the qucktimealt. The .mov files are played fine, but only by the mediaplayer classic included. But I'll give a try in a day or so. No harm can be done. The way i've descriebed works ok.

pietro 26th November 2003 09:53 PM

Firstly, thank you all for your patience and assistance.

I have now got the BSPlayer to work with rm files.

Now for QT. I d/l the codecs which include qtmlClient.dll plus 3 others called qt internet extras, qt and qt essentials. I copied the dll to System32 folder but what do I do with the others?

AstroNox 29th December 2003 03:59 PM

I doubt it will be possible to incorporate QT in without a pertinent DirectShow splitter.

AstroNox 29th December 2003 04:09 PM

Oh yes, I would like to add that there are, perhaps, some anomalies in the Real Codec/Splitter, because for some reason, there is a certain .rm file that I have which cannot be played by it (in BSPlayer), but it works fine in RealOne. I believe that the Codec/Splitter may be incomplete or not fully functional.

AstroNox 30th December 2003 10:00 AM

I've just tried Media Player Classic, from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli
or as a package in FinalBuild's site,
http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm

Like what adicoto said, Quicktime works fine in it. I also tested the .rm file which I was unable to play in BSPlayer and it worked fine too. I think there must be some code inherent in MPC that allows both Real and QT to work properly, and that is probably why Real couldn't fully work in BSPlayer and WMP (yes you can play them in there too, as long as you got the codec and splitter), and QT not being able to at all.

pietro 30th December 2003 10:23 PM

what does the splitter actually do?

A splitter splits a video file into its video and audio components, if I'm not wrong. :D

djventilator 15th January 2004 04:38 PM
