Overlay 1,2 or what?

I'd like to know what exactly are the differences between the several overlay modes... cause i dont know which one to use.

i've an ati radeon 9700 with two screens and a tv plugged on it. I usually watch my movies on the tv, but also, sometimes, on one of my two screens...

If someone could explain what are overlay modes correctly, it would be great!
