What's up with the avatar settings? every one i've tried is too large or says unable to whatever.

As indicated at the appropriate page:
Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).
So what is the size of the image you wish to use?
Can you upload it as an attachment to a post?
