What type of subtitles are you using?
Please also check settings on the "Subtitles"-tab of "Options"/"Preferences" (such in combination with (especially) overlay settings on "Video"-tab and settings of DivX5.1 ("Start"/"Programs"/"DivX"/"DivX Codec"/"config.exe"))
