For the color settings, you can try to set them with the Graphic card settings. It should work at least for Overlay renderer, I don't know if it also applies to EVR.
Anyway to properly save the preferences, the settings file in Vista should be located in UserProfile folder and probably to have UAC disabled (unfortunately I can't test with Vista at the moment)
On my computer (WinXP) with other players I have a darker image than BSplayer only when I use overlay renderer just because I've not set the overlay colors in my graphic card's preferences, but as soon as I switch to VMR7 or 9 mode the brightness is the same between BSplayer and other players ;)
