So I guess upgrading didn't help?
If DivX config tool crashes then unistall DivX download it again from divx.com and install.
When you play something in BSplayer in right click menu in "options" option, there is "filter" option. There you see decoders that BSplayer use to play that specific file.
If ffdshow isn't used to play broken files then there is no need to disable it, if it is, just click on it there, and you will see config window.
