AVI or OGM container?
Did you try to reinstall latest XVid binary- unstable builds?
Caution! Current build from 15-01-2003 (Koepi) @ http://www.roeder.goe.net/~koepi/ contains certain unfixed bugs.
Try decoder-only-installer instead.
